I am so sorry that I am not being much active here in my blog and messages. I am studying in Germany in this summer semester, and travelling as much as I can, so all my internet time is being used for studying and planning. And I am having so much fun! Will go back home soon, though, so next month you might see me more :)

thelanguagenerd said: Hallo! Meine deutsche mündliche Prüfung ist am Donnerstag. The task will be in the form of a debate, and I don't know precisely what I will have to discuss - could be anything from immigration to the environment. Wondered if you could please recommend a few idioms/idiomatic expressions that could come in use during the debate/general use? Vielen Dank für Ihre Hilfe!

germannn:

S O R R Y !

I’m afraid this message got lost in my ask box. :S I know it’s too late now (I hope your oral exam went well anyway), but here are some idioms and phrases for next time:

Starting your argumentation:

  • Zu allererst … = First of all
  • Erstens … = First … (If you start with “first”, you’ll obviously have to come to “second” eventually = “zweitens”.)

Transitional phrases:

  • Außerdem … = Moreover …
  • Darüber hinaus … = Moreover …
  • Hinzu kommt, dass … (also used to add something)
  • Nebenbei bemerkt … = By the way …
  • Abgesehen davon … = Apart from that …

Expressing your opinion:

  • Meiner Meinung nach … = In my opinion …
  • Meiner Ansicht nach … = In my view …
  • In meinen Augen … =  In my view ….
  • Ich denke, dass … = I think that …
  • Ich glaube, dass … = I believe that …
  • Ich bin davon überzeugt, dass … = I am convinced that …
  • Ich bin sicher, dass … = I am certain that …

Comparing:

  • einerseits / andererseits = on the one hand / on the other hand
  • Im Vergleich zu … = In comparison to …
  • Im Kontrast zu … = In contrast to …
  • Im Gegensatz zu … = In opposition to …
  • Während … = While …

Drawing a conclusion:

  • Daraus lässt sich schließen, dass … ~ This leads to the conclusion that …
  • Daraus kann man schließen, dass … ~ This leads to the conclusion that …
  • Daraus ergibt sich die Schlussfolgerung, dass … ~ This leads to the conclusion that …
  • Daraus folgt, dass … = From this it follows that …
  • Das Ergebnis ist … = The result is …

Expressing doubt/uncertainty:

  • Es ist fraglich, ob … = It is questionable if …
  • Es ist bleibt abzuwarten, ob … = It remains to be seen if …

Ending your argumentation:

  • Zu allerletzt … = Finally …
  • Zum Schluss … = Finally …

Summing things up:

  • Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen/festhalten, dass … = Summing up, it can be said that …
  • Um alles zusammenfassen: … = To sum it up: …
  • Kurz gesagt: … = In short: …

etc.

I could go on and on. Those are just a few examples, but they should help if you ever have to participate in a debate or if you have to write an essay in German. :)
